Septic Tank Installation Across Sussex, Surrey and Kent
CJ Groundworks installs septic tanks and associated drainage systems for homes, farms, rural properties and commercial premises across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.
With more than 35 years of groundworks and drainage experience, our family-run team can manage the physical installation from the initial site assessment and excavation through to tank placement, drainage connections, backfilling and reinstatement.
We also assess existing systems that are damaged, underperforming or no longer suitable for the property. Where a septic tank is not the right option, we will explain whether a sewage treatment plant or another off-mains drainage solution should be considered.
Every quotation is based on the property’s usage, ground conditions, available space, site access and proposed discharge arrangement.

Septic Tank Installation and Replacement Services
We provide septic tank installation, replacement and associated groundworks for properties without a suitable connection to the mains sewer.
Each project begins with an assessment of the existing drainage arrangement, expected usage, available land, ground conditions and access for excavation equipment. We then recommend a practical installation based on the findings rather than applying a standard specification to every property.
Septic Tank Installation
We install septic tank systems for domestic and commercial properties across West Sussex, Surrey and Kent.
The work can include:
- Reviewing the proposed tank location
- Excavation and preparation of the installation area
- Concrete base or anchoring work where specified
- Supply and placement of the septic tank
- Inlet and outlet drainage connections
- Installation of an appropriate drainage field
- Pumped arrangements where site levels require them
- Backfilling and reinstatement of disturbed ground
- Coordination with Building Control where included in the quotation
We can install systems from established manufacturers, including Klargester, where the selected model is suitable for the property and site conditions.
Any surveys, approvals, applications or third-party professional input required for the project will be identified before work begins.
Septic Tank Replacement
An existing septic tank may need replacing if it is cracked, regularly overflowing, producing persistent odours or no longer able to serve the property effectively.
Replacement may also be required where:
- Wastewater is backing up into the property
- Wet ground or sewage is appearing near the tank or drainage field
- The tank or connecting pipework has been damaged
- The property has been extended or its occupancy has increased
- The existing discharge arrangement does not meet current requirements
- Repairs would not provide a reliable long-term solution
We will inspect the visible parts of the existing installation, review the proposed discharge arrangement and explain whether a replacement septic tank, sewage treatment plant or other solution is likely to be appropriate.
The agreed work can include decommissioning the old tank, installing the replacement system, altering drainage runs and reinstating the affected area.
Septic Tank Emptying & Servicing
CJ Groundworks does not empty septic tanks directly, but we can recommend local registered waste carriers operating across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.
We can also assist with:
- Investigation of damaged tanks and drainage connections
- Inspection of accessible installation components
- Drainage and groundworks repairs
- Access improvements for future emptying
- Advice on replacement or upgrading an older system
Septic tanks should be emptied before accumulated sludge exceeds the tank’s capacity and at least once a year, or in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Emptying must be carried out by a registered waste carrier.
Contact us with details of the problem and, where known, the tank manufacturer, approximate age and most recent emptying date. We will confirm whether the work falls within our scope.

When is a Septic Tank the Right Solution?
A septic tank may be suitable where the property cannot reasonably connect to a public foul sewer and there is enough suitable land for a correctly designed drainage field.
It may be considered for:
- Rural homes without mains drainage
- Barn conversions and property renovations
- New homes in off-mains locations
- Farms and equestrian properties
- Holiday lets and guest accommodation
- Small rural commercial premises
A septic tank will not be appropriate for every site. The available space, soil and groundwater conditions, proposed daily flow, nearby water supplies, surrounding properties and distance from sensitive locations must all be considered.
Septic tank effluent must discharge to the ground through a suitable infiltration system. It must not discharge directly to a stream, ditch, river, pond or other surface water. Where a compliant drainage field cannot be provided, a sewage treatment plant or another solution may be required.
CJ Groundworks can assess the physical installation requirements and explain the groundworks involved before you commit to a system.

/ FAQs
Septic Tank Installation FAQs
A septic tank is an underground chamber that collects and partially treats wastewater from your home. Solids settle at the bottom while liquid effluent drains safely into a soakaway or drainage field. It’s a passive, energy-free system that requires only periodic emptying.
Typically every 12–18 months, depending on usage and tank capacity. Neglecting to empty your tank can cause blockages, odours, and system failures. We can recommend trusted septic tank emptying providers in your local area.
Since 2020, all septic tanks must comply with the Environment Agency’s General Binding Rules. Discharges directly to surface water are no longer permitted. CJ Groundworks ensures every septic tank installation is fully compliant and properly certified.
Most installations only require Building Control notification rather than full planning permission. If discharging to a watercourse or installing in complex ground conditions, we’ll handle any necessary permits and approvals.
Signs include foul odours, standing water near the tank, backflow issues, or regular overflows. Our specialists can assess your system and advise if a new septic tank installation is needed.

What clients say about us
I contracted CJ Groundworks to install a sewage treatment plant, it was a very pleasant experience dealing with Chris and his ever smiling team. The job was done professionally in time at a reasonable price. The plant is working satisfactorily for 3 months.
After calling round dozens of other contractors and hearing nothing I came across CJ groundwork's and I'm glad I did. They built a big shed base and carried out landscaping work in the garden. They fitted us in at short notice and everything was done to a brilliant standard at a fair......
